Second Generation Anti-skimming device "ASD2"

Communicates the threat to the operator

In a world increasingly dependant on legitimate wireless technology, ATM Parts Co Ltd, a division of Acal's Supply Chain group, has launched a second generation Anti-Skimming Device (ASD2), aimed at overcoming the criminal's ingenuity to adopt such wireless technology to skim ATM customers' card details.

Market Intelligence

Despite the migration to chip and pin, the continued global use of magnetic stripe technology on cards means that card skimming continues to thrive, in fact the European ATM Security Team (EAST) in April 2008 reported a 43% increase in skimming related ATM fraud losses.

The challenge for the Financial Institutions is therefore to try and stay one step ahead. With feedback from the Financial Institutions, 12 months ago, ATM Parts Co embarked on a research and development program to enhance the Anti-skimming technology available to meet the perceived threat posed by the increasingly sophisticated technology utilized by the criminals.

Second Generation Anti-skimming device

This journey led to the evolution of the second generation technology, culminating in the ATM-ASD202G (ASD2). The "Detect and Protect" and ease of installation design philosophy is preserved, allowing enhanced detection, analysis and reporting of 'alien' radio frequency (RF) transmissions such as those from wireless spy cameras, whilst retaining independence of the Card Reader and facilitating position independence within the ATM.

The ATM-ASD202G (ASD2) is a completely new design therefore allowing for significant enhancements to be made to meet the requirements of the Financial Institutions.

Enhancements

Once wireless transmissions have been detected the ATM-ASD202G (ASD2) analyses the data to evaluate the level of threat and communicate the perceived 'type' of threat back to the operator, or, if desired, take the ATM out of service (set up option).

The ATM-ASD202G (ASD2) utilises sophisticated filtering techniques to pin point the potential 'threat' signal allowing it to be future proofed and flexible to meet the dynamics of this particular source of card fraud. The ATM-ASD202G (ASD2) is therefore able to detect signals such those from a:

  • 1.4/2.45/4.6Ghz spy camera
  • Bluetooth device
  • Zigbee device

and communicate these back to the operator.

The ATM-ASD202G (ASD2) can also detect and communicate back key elements of background RF noise that may or may not be normal, for example, Wireless LAN and close proximity mobile phones.

Given the recent re-emergence of the more established threats the ATM-ASD202G (ASD2) also has additional options allowing:

  • Fascia monitoring
  • False card reader head detection
  • Lebanese Loop detection

Compatibility with existing installations and equipment is paramount and has been maintained, for example, integration of the ATM-ASD202G (ASD2) with the ATMeye video security system to provide a feature rich solution for protecting the ATM and making the usage of it secure for its customers.

Foot Note:

The ATM-ASD202G is only available to Financial Institutions and authorised Third Party Maintainers.
